Serving Our Community

Waco Vision Source takes pride in the community that we call home. We are committed to giving back to the community where we live and work.

Dr. Virden is co-author of the children’s book, Goodnight Waco. Written in the style of the children’s classic Goodnight Moon, Goodnight Waco originated as a labor of love for students across the Greater Waco area.

The Junior League of Waco celebrated its 85th anniversary with the publication of Goodnight Waco, which highlights all the exciting and enchanting landmarks of the sweetest little town on the “banks of the Brazos.” The book was written and illustrated to appeal to all ages, from toddlers to young readers to anyone who loves the memorable sites and iconic locations our diverse city has to share.

One thousand copies were gifted to Waco ISD Pre-K students, with additional copies available at bookstores and gift shops around town. Goodnight Waco is a unique keepsake for visitors and anyone with connections to this vibrant Texas city.

For over two decades, the majority of Dr. Virden’s community service has focused on our fur-legged friends. She served multiple terms on the Board of Directors of Animal Birth Control Clinic, with an additional two terms as Board President. During her tenure as President, the foundation was laid to move the clinic into a modern, purpose-built facility in order to serve more pets and their families.

Waco Vision Source also supported the Humane Society of Central Texas as a multi-year sponsor of the annual Wine and Food Festival fundraiser, which Dr. Virden eventually chaired for two consecutive years. Waco Vision Source was also the title sponsor for the inaugural Waco’s All-Breed Rescue Event, and championed the event until it was paused due to COVID.

The Virden family and Waco Vision Source have worked with German Shepherd Rescue of Central Texas for many years. From fostering and transporting, to fundraising and donating, to adopting, they have been actively involved in helping these amazing dogs find forever homes.

Closer to home, Dr. Virden and Dr. Sanders participate annually in the Fuzzy Friends Calendar fundraiser, and they have sponsored the Pooches on Parade fundraiser, as well. They also support Waco Pets Alive! , a unique organization that fills a gap in our pet rescue community. The group exclusively rescues urgent animals from the Waco shelter, and also focuses on assisting local citizens to help to keep pets together with the people who love them — even in difficult situations.
